HISTORY:

Next time one of your friends give you a hard time about using herbs, ask them, “Do you drink coffee?” Coffee is the world’s most widely used herbal infusion. The average American drinks about 28 gallons a year.

The word coffee comes from Caffa, which is a region in Ethiopia where coffee beans were first discovered around A.D. 1000. Arabians began grinding and roasting coffee beans and drinking the beverage hot as we do today. Coffee spread worldwide slowly. It remained in the Middle East for 500 years. Around 1500, spice traders began introducing it into Italy and within 150 years, coffee spread throughout Europe.

PREPARATION:

  • Infusion (cup of java):

Use one heaping teaspoon of ground beans or instant per cup of boiling water. Drink it black, or sweeten it with sugar and milk to taste. Drink up to 3 cups of tea per day.

Coffee grows in tropical areas around the world. The plant is an evergreen tree or small shrub with bright crimson fruits. The green seeded beans are extracted and roasted, producing it’s dark brown color.

You can grow a coffee plant if you live in a sunny, humid area and the temperature does not drop lower than 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Moist air, good sunlight, moist soil with good drainage is required. They grow well in green houses and not so good in homes with forced air heating.

USE: (Grow Your Own)

If you reside in an area where coffee is produced, ripe coffee cherries can be picked by hand, wash, pulp and ferment in a container until the pulp falls off. Re-wash and throw away any floating beans. Dry on mesh in air and avoid sun. Beans should be moist inside and dry on the outside.

If you do not reside in an area where coffee is produced, purchase fresh green coffee.  Soak seeds in water for about a day and drain. Place seeds 1/2 inches into damp, sand or loamy well drained soil.  Planting can be done indoors under artificial lighting. Water the seeds once a week. Flowering will take 2 to 3 weeks. Once cherries start appearing, harvest, pulp, ferment, dry roast and enjoy.

SAFETY:

Coffee may increase anxiety, blood pressure, cholesterol, heart rate, respiratory rate and stomach acid secretions. Coffee is listed on the FDA’s list as being generally safe.
